European elections: Brexit Party TRIUMPHS in Wales – Labour suffer SHAMEFUL defeat

In Wales Nigel Farage’s party defied the pundits’ predictions to clinch 33 percent of the vote, versus 20 percent for Plaid Cymru and 15 percent for Labour. The Liberal Democrats came fourth with 14 percent while the Tories were pushed into an embarrassing fifth place, just ahead of the Green Party. The result means out of the four MEPs elected in Wales two went to the Brexit Party and one to each of Labour and the Plaid Cyrmu.

Speaking after the Brexit Party surged across the UK Mr Farage commented: “Never before in British politics has a new party launched just six weeks ago topped the polls.

“The reason is very obvious: we voted to leave and we haven’t.

“The Labour and Conservative parties can learn a huge lesson, though I doubt they will.

“The new date is October 31 and we in the Brexit Party want to be part of that negotiation.

“I have to say this: if we don’t leave on October 31 then the scores you see for the Brexit Party today will be repeated in a general election and we are getting ready for it.”

Wales new MEPs are Nathan Gill and James Wells from the Brexit Party, Jill Evans from Plaid Cymru and Jacqueline Jones for Labour.

The result is the first time Labour has fallen behind Plaid Cymru, which backs Welsh independence, across Wales.

Meanwhile the fifth place Conservatives only beat the Green Party by 0.2 percent of the vote.

Reacting to the result Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price insisted Wales, which voted leave in 2016, is now anti-Brexit.

He commented: “Wales, that did vote Leave three years ago, is now again a Remain nation.

“If you tally up the votes of the avowedly-Remain parties against the avowedly-Leave, we won.

“This is a historic victory for us in overtaking Labour for the first time in our history.

“You’ve got to go all the way back to Keir Hardie to see Labour coming third in an election in Wales.”

Wales has traditionally been a Labour Party stronghold, making third place finish unprecedented in modern UK politics.
