Erik Cowie dead: Netflix's Tiger King zookeeper found dead in New York aged 53

Erik Cowie, who appeared on Netflix hit Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, has died at the age of 53.

The late zookeeper was reportedly found on Friday in New York in the bedroom of a property, according to TMZ.

The US media outlet added that there was “nothing suspicious about the death” and that “no drugs were found on the scene”.

A toxicology test has yet to be performed on the star by a medical professional.

Erik was best known for his appearance as the zookeeper caring for Joe Exotic’s animals on the series.

The star, who usually resides in Oklahoma, was reportedly found face down in a bed by a friend.

Ever the animal-lover, Erik continued to care for Joe’s animals even after he went to prison in January 2020.

He even testified against Joe in court, claiming that he had heard the star order some of his animals to be shot and killed.

Earlier this year, the star pleaded guilty to a DUI in Oklahoma.

The seven-part documentary follows a number of big cat owners, breeders, and conservationists.

However, the US-based show focused mainly on the feud between Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin.

In June, the former Dancing With The Stars contestant sold her Oklahoma property where Exotic’s Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park used to be.

However, the sale stipulated that the new owners cannot use the building to house exotic animals for the next 100 years, reports TMZ.
