Enjoy a post-lockdown picnic & feed the family on a budget with my British take on tapas

TAKE your picnic to a whole new level post-lockdown with a British take on tapas.

A little of this, a little of that adds up to a family feast perfect for enjoying al fresco. Think potato smileys, chicken nuggets, Party Rings, Jammie Dodgers and, of course, the humble sausage roll. But here’s how you can save even more . . .

ROLL WITH IT: The sausage roll – perhaps one of the most British snacks there is. Plus, if you head to Iceland, you can enjoy a cheaper version of everyone’s favourite Greggs offering to heat at home – it’s just £2 for a pack of four or £3.50 for an eight pack. If you’re a veggie, you can also enjoy a four pack of vegan sausage rolls for £2.50 – cheaper than buying from the bakery chain, where a single roll can cost around £1.20, depending on location.

Remember Turkey Twizzlers? Jamie Oliver might not be a fan, but I love them. Grab Bernard Matthews Original Tangy Tomato Turkey Twizzlers for £2.50 at Sainsbury’s, usually £3.

SWEET TREAT: Nab a cheap and cheerful pack of Fox’s Party Rings at Asda for just 50p. If you’re feeling extra savvy, head to Aldi where their version of the ‘Iced Ring’ biscuit is 43p. Love biscuits? Jammie Dodgers are also 50p at Asda, but Aldi’s Jammy Wheels are 42p.

MINI MUST-HAVES: Why do mini-versions of food always seem to taste better? Add mini pizzas to the mix and slice the price by heading to Asda where you can nab 12 for £2 — working out as more bang for your buck than Sainsbury’s, where nine cost £1.80. When it comes to those moreish cocktail sausages, go to Tesco where you can grab a 70 pack for just £2 when using a Clubcard — usually £3.

SPUDDY GOOD: Curly fries, anyone? Some of the cheapest I’ve found are Aldi’s Crispy And Golden Curly Fries, just 85p for 650g. If you prefer potato smileys, grab a bag of McCain Smiles for just £1 at Iceland – they’re £1.75 at Asda.
