England squad request Liverpool star Joe Gomez receives gesture from Gareth Southgate

The England players want Gareth Southgate to end the Joe Gomez and Raheem Sterling saga by starting the pair in Kosovo on Sunday, according to reports.

It comes after Gomez received boos from his own supporters at Wembley as England ran out 7-0 winners over Montenegro.

Southgate reportedly consoled Gomez in the dressing room after the match, with the Liverpool defender understandably upset and confused.

According to The Telegraph, the players would like both players to start this weekend in an act of unity.

Southgate has already indicated that Sterling will make an instant return to the side.

The Manchester City forward made it clear the situation was done and dusted, issuing a message of support for his team-mate on Twitter following last night’s incident.

“It was hard for me to see my team-mate get booed for something that was my fault,” Sterling tweeted.

“Joe hasn’t done anything wrong and for me to see someone who keeps his head down and works hard, especially after a difficult week for him, to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong.

“I’ve taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence.”

Gareth Southgate also made it clear that he was not happy with the way supporters reacted to Gomez’s entrance to the field.

“I am hugely disappointed for Joe,” he said after the match.

“Joe had done nothing wrong and no England player should be booed like that when they are wearing the shirt.

“All the players are particularly disappointed with that.”

England booked their place at next summer’s tournament in style as they run riot at Wembley, meaning Sunday’s fixture is something of a dead rubber.

It presents the perfect chance for Southgate to send a clear message, while also looking at some of the other players in the squad.

The Three Lions boss is also believed to have offered his support to Gomez’s family.
