Emmerdale: Where is Adam Barton? What happened to him?

Emmerdale fans haven’t seen Adam Barton (played by Adam Thomas) since his dramatic exit at the very beginning of January 2018. However, the character has remained a firm favourite amongst ITV soap fans with Adam’s exit and whereabouts still at the forefront of their minds. Here’s what happened to Adam Barton and where the Emmerdale character is now.

What happened to Adam Barton on Emmerdale?

Adam Barton left Emmerdale after escaping prison sentencing for the murder of Emma Barton (Gillian Kearney).

Emmerdale viewers watched in horror as the evil Emma was murder by Adam’s on-screen mum Moira (Natalie J Robb).

However, Adam confessed to the crime in an attempt to spare his mother time in prison.

The ITV soap took an action-packed turn while Adam was on his way to court for sentencing, however.

Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) ambushed the police van, breaking Adam free.

The trio headed to the docks where Adam boarded a cargo ship headed to France, not before tearful goodbye with his wife Victoria Sugden (Isobel Hodgins).

Adam made his way to France but, in 2018, it was revealed he had moved on.

In a desperate attempt to track him down, Victoria hired a private investigator.

The investigator told Victoria that Adam was in Portugal, but Aaron knew this to be false after receiving a letter him.

Adam’s letter to Aaron revealed he was living in Budapest, Hungary.

However, as Victoria set out to find him in the Hungarian capital, Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) dropped the bombshell Adam had found a new girlfriend.

To add insult to injury, Aaron and Robert also revealed Adam had since left Budapest and they had no idea where he was.

Emmerdale still hasn’t made Adam’s current whereabouts known, neither to viewers nor the residents.

Away from the soap, the actor behind Adam Barton, Adam Thomas, has been enjoying a change in career away from acting.

Thomas landed himself the role of property executive for a luxury realtor group based in Manchester.

The former Emmerdale star revealed in a heartfelt Instagram post back in 2018: “I haven’t, nor will I ever, turn my back on acting but I have a family to support and will carry on doing so…whether it be acting or otherwise.”

Thomas’ career move hasn’t stopped him from making a handful of on-screen appearance since leaving the ITV soap either.

In 2019, Thomas landed a recurring role in BBC drama Pitching In, opposite former EastEnders and Gavin and Stacey star Larry Lamb.
