Edu’s son Luigi has received online abuse from Arsenal supporters after reports claimed that the club may miss out on signing Pablo Mari.

The Gunners have been looking to sign a new defender during the January transfer window and appeared on course to land the Spanish centre-back after negotiations intensified with Flamengo last week.

On Saturday, Mari travelled with Edu from Brazil to London and the defender completed his medical over the weekend.

But the deal now appears to be in jeopardy as Flamengo have accused Arsenal of changing the terms of the deal.

Reports in Brazil have claimed that Arsenal have gone from offering Flamengo a permanent transfer worth £7.5 million to a loan deal which includes an option to buy in the summer.

Mari has now returned to Brazil and Flamengo expect the 26-year-old to begin pre-season training with them.

The Brazilian club are also unhappy with Arsenal’s decision to change the terms of the deal at such a late stage.

Edu, who is Arsenal’s technical director, has played a key role in Mari’s transfer but the former midfielder’s 15-year-old son, Luigi, received abuse from Gunners supporters on social media on Monday following suggestions that the deal could now be off.

One fan wrote: ‘Your dad is a fraud and unprofessional if this doesn’t happen.’

Another posted directly to Luigi: ‘F*** your father Edu.’

Luigi joined Arsenal’s academy from Brazilian side Corinthians last summer.
