Ed Miliband returns to shadow cabinet in Keir Starmer's major reshuffle

Ed Miliband today returns to the shadow cabinet for the first time in five years after Keir Starmer wielded the axe in a sweeping reshuffle.

The new Labour leader gave the ex-leader his rival Rebecca Long-Bailey’s job of Shadow Business Secretary.

Meanwhile outspoken Windrush and Grenfell campaigner David Lammy is today named Shadow Justice Secretary.

Ms Long-Bailey remains in the shadow cabinet as Shadow Education Secretary.

But there is no job for Jeremy Corbyn, despite him saying he’d take one, and his allies Richard Burgon, Ian Lavery, Dan Carden and Barry Gardiner have all been sacked.

Shadow Attorney General Baroness Chakrabarti – criticised for years over her “whitewash” report into Labour anti-Semitism – has been replaced with Tony Blair’s former flatmate Lord Falconer.

Also gone is Work and Pensions chief Margaret Greenwood – who is replaced with Jonathan Reynolds.

And former Corrie star Tracy Brabin is out of the job of Shadow Culture Secretary, replaced by Jo Stevens.

Jobs have been given to rising stars Thangam Debbonaire (Housing), Jim McMahon (Transport) and Preet Kaur Gill (International Development).

Another rising star, Louise Haigh, has been made Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary – but only temporarily while Tony Lloyd is in hospital with coronavirus.

Deputy leadership candidate Dawn Butler is out from Women and Equalities – replaced by Marsha De Cordova.

Announcing the full Shadow Cabinet list today, Sir Keir said: “I’m proud to have appointed a Shadow Cabinet that showcases the breadth, depth and talents of the Labour Party.

“This is a new team that will be relentlessly focused on acting in the national interest to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and rebuilding Labour so that it can win the next election.”
