Dying Light 2: Absolutely Everything you need to know about Techland’s sequel – Release date, Time, PS5, Demo, Zombies & more

Considering how incredibly successful the original game still is, with millions of people continuing to play every month, it won’t come as much of a surprise that Dying Light 2 is on its way.

Simply called Dying Light 2, the sequel is scheduled to arrive in “Spring 2020”. It completely stole the show at the E3 2019 showcase with its brand new trailer, which showed us that the delay would be completely worth it.

But if you’re here for the facts, then look no further; this piece is devoted to everything about Dying Light 2’s highly anticipated release.

Release date

Despite originally being considered for a 2019 launch, the Dying Light 2 release date has been pushed back to a more elusive “Spring 2020” window.

This means that the sequel could drop at any point between March and June – but we are hoping that it will be sooner rather than later, as we don’t know how much longer we can wait!

The delayed release date was announced with a new gameplay trailer, which gave us our first proper look at The City and our infected protagonist Aiden Caldwell.

Techland has also confirmed that Dying Light 2 will be launching on PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett when they are released, so prepare your eyes for flawless graphics and gore that has no end.

Time and Setting

Techland describes the time period that the game is set in as the “new dark ages”, where society has been dragged back into a Hobbesian state of nature by the zombie apocalypse. The sequel is set in the city of Harran, the very same Ottoman styled city that featured in the original game.

The only difference is that 15 long years have passed, and now the humans pose as much of a threat to each other as the zombies do.

It is still unclear who you will be playing as, but the voice has changed noticeably from that of Kyle Crane in the prequel – we hope that the new protagonist Aiden Caldwell is slightly more charismatic and engaging than Crane.

Demo

In the absence of a release date, Techland was more than happy to show off several minutes of direct gameplay footage at E3 2019, implying that the game is in the final stages of production.

Naturally, the updated visuals are gorgeous, and the demo also gives you a good idea of the game’s updated parkour and combat mechanics. The video shows off rich colours and exquisite skyline, so it’s worth the watch.

More of an RPG

In Dying Light 2, the plot is an organic, reactive creation that can head in a multitude of directions, depending on your response in certain situations. Your actions will always affect the environment around you.

It was announced that Chris Avellone – the famed writer known for his work on multitudes of RPGs, such as Fallout: New Vegas – has been assisting Techland by designing a more ambitious story than the one that featured in Dead Light.

The Zombies

While Techland were careful not to leak details about its new take on the infected, GamesRadar got the first big scoop with their exclusive concept art, featuring one of the terrifying infected zombies.

Player choices will influence whole regions of The City in Dying Light 2; so you will be forced to make decisions on the spot, where the outcome is entirely unknown.

The infected start as a “Viral” (someone who only just got bitten and infected) so they still show traces of humanity, and they are at their quickest and most dangerous at this point.

After some time in that state, they turn into a “Biter”, which is pretty much a regular zombie. Biters will try to grab you and infect you, or just eat you. The sunlight is dangerous to them, and they are slow moving unlike the Virals.

If a Biter stays in the sun for too long they turn into a “Degenerate” ( a decaying zombie that is extremely weak and not so dangerous to you. But you should keep an eye on them because Dying Light 2 is a systemic game, meaning that a lot of things will happen emergently.

The final path of evolution for the infected is where they turn into the “Volatiles” – the most dangerous  zombies that become extreme night predators. If you see them, there is no fighting: you just need to run.
