Drive Director Nicolas Winding Refn Knows Who Is Playing Batgirl, Wants to Direct

While casting rumors for DC’s upcoming Batgirl movie have been flying these last few weeks, there has been precious little talk about who will take over directing duties for the flick. At one point The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron writer-director Joss Whedon was up for the job, but then he dropped out for one reason or another depending on who you ask. And today we have word that – as strange as it sounds – Neon Demon and Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn wants his chance to helm the Barbara Gordon motion picture.

“Regarding everything else, no I mean, projects that have come to me or been approached about, I’ve always decided not to do them in the end. I love Hollywood. I love glamour and glitz. I love camp. I love vanity, I love egos, I indulge in all that, but the bigger kind of approaches or the offers that have come my way or the interest, in the end, I’ve always just felt that I wasn’t the right person in the end for it. Doesn’t mean that it won’t happen. I mean I would love to do one of those comic book (movies), I mean, me and Batgirl it’s like, we coexist,” the Too Old To Die Young and Only God Forgives filmmaker recently admitted.

He continues on to say:

“It’s just like a lot of people are obsessed with the idea of this is it or this is it. If it comes and it’s the right, and I can do my version of it, or I can be part of a contribution to that, great. But if it’s not, I’ll just go make something else.”

And if all of this wasn’t enough, right at the very end of the interview, Refn quickly threw out there:

“I know who’s going to play [Batgirl].”

Obviously, the eccentric filmmaker didn’t spill the beans on camera, which is too bad. That said, names that have been floated around regarding the titular crimefighter include such names as Kick-Ass and Dark Shadows actress Chloe Grace Moretz and Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi star Daisy Ridley. My money is on Ridley.

Anyhow, while it’s been rumored that Warner Bros. is looking for a female director to take the helm of this planned Batgirl movie, you never know. Maybe the powers that be behind the scenes will get super brave out of nowhere and hand over the keys to the flick to the guy who helmed a motion picture in which supermodels literally eat each other. Stranger things have happened after all. I guess we’ll see one of these days.

Meanwhile, we do know that the Batgirl movie is currently being written by Bumblebee and Birds of Prey screenwriter Cathy Yan. For those of you that might not know, Birds of Prey or Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress. It is all set to hit a theater near you on February 7, 2020. This story comes to us via Collider over on YouTube.
