Doom 64 appears on PEGI age rating site for PS4

Does Bethesda still have one more secret to share?

Ignoring the leaks that happened beforehand, re-releasing Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 for current gen consoles was probably the biggest surprise at Quakecon over the weekend.

The long-running fan event may have been keeping one surprise back though, as for a short time the European PEGI age rating site had a listing for Doom 64.

It’s gone now, put website Gematsu were able to snap the screenshot below that matches the format of the entries for Doom and Doom II – which also only list the games for PlayStation 4 and PC, even though they’re also out on Xbox One and PC.

Clearly someone at PEGI hasn’t been paying attention, as they haven’t got a listing for Doom 3 at all – even though it’s currently available.

It’s possible Doom 64 was added by mistake instead of it, but such an obscure game is not something anyone’s going to start talking about by accident, without some kind of catalyst.

Doom 64 was released in 1997, long after Doom’s PC debut in 1993 and several years after the seminal GoldenEye 007. That meant it was largely dismissed at the time, but in retrospect many now consider it to be the best version of the game.

Why it wouldn’t be released at the same time as the others though is a mystery, which has led many fans to guess that maybe it’s intended as a surprise release to coincide with the annoucement of the Doom Slayer as a character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

So far, all the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC has been for third party characters and Bethesda has admitted previously that they’ve spoken to Nintendo about Smash. And as it happens, the next addition – the hero from various Dragon Quest games – is to have his release date revealed tomorrow in a new Nintendo Direct.

A slightly more likely explanation though is that Doom 64 is intended as some kind of bonus or extra for Doom Eternal, which is due for release on 22 November.

Either that or someone at PEGI really likes trolling fans.
