'Don't delay third Covid booster vaccine shots – the virus is far from beaten'


The medical world is now split on when is the best time to start offering booster jabs but it would be better to err on the side of caution amid fears of a fresh wave of infections when schools return

Thanks to the vaccination programme, life has started to return to normal.

But the virus is far from beaten and there are fears of a fresh wave of infections when schools return at the start of next month.

There is also evidence the protection offered by the vaccine is starting to wane.

Scientists say this is not unexpected and stress that those who have had both doses are still much less likely to become seriously ill.

It’s a difficult judgement call but it would be better to err on the side of caution.

If people with low immunity or chronic health conditions need the booster now, there should be no delay in providing it.

The haulage industry was already struggling with recruitment but the situation has been made worse by workers having to self-isolate and post-Brexit immigration laws.

Supermarket bosses are calling on the Government to relax the rules to make it easier to recruit workers from overseas.

While this would help, it does not address the main reason why there is a shortage of drivers: the poor pay and conditions.

If you want to recruit and retain staff, you must start by offering them a decent wage.
