Disco lips are the party season beauty trend you need to try

There’s no such thing as too much sparkle at Christmas time – the more tinsel, the more Christmas lights, the more sequins, the better. And this extends to our makeup bags, too. I’m not talking about shimmery eyeshadows this time (although we’re all for them, as well), nor even glitzy highlighters for frosted cheekbones.

In fact, sparkle has made its way into our lip products, with disco lips emerging as the surprise hit of the season. First, Pat McGrath made an early entrance with her BlitzTrance glitzy lipsticks over the summer, then – over the last month and in time for the Crimbo festivities – Dior, Bobbi Brown, MAC, NARS, KIKO Gucci and AVON all released shimmer infused lipsticks of their own.

But while glitter lips may not sound immediately wearable, these luxe brands have elevated the idea of shimmer, from gritty, fleck-filled textures to smooth, expensive-looking alternatives. Take Dior’s Diorific Happy 2020 lipsticks for example – available in a soft pink and festive red, at first glance, they just look like beautifully pigmented lip shades. When they catch the light, though, they have a subtle glint (perfect candlelit soirees).

Then there’s Bobbi Brown’s Luxe Jewel Lipstick (in pale pink, gold and red) and MAC’s Kiss Of Stars Lipstick (in futuristic blue, silver, orchid purple, ruby red and petal pink). Scattered with superfine sparkles both offer up pretty, twinkly options that nod to tinsel lips (but in a very chic way).

Want something more out there for going OUT OUT? NARS’ Disco Dust Lipstick is a merry, metallic affair in a mix of delicate and daring shades. The vibrant magenta shade, Pat, for example, would look particularly effective paired with clean, fresh skin and minimal eye makeup. If you’re off for a proper knees up, this is the D.I.S.C.O sidekick that’ll put the spotlight on your lips.

The bad news is, shimmer lipsticks are already proving a smash hit with many of the shades for each selling out completely online. The good news is, they’re still available in own-brand boutiques and beauty departments across the country. And, if you want to trial the trend without the higher price tag, AVON has just released a subtly sparkly range of shades in its new Prism Lipstick, for £8.
