Dirty John season 2 is coming… but it will be VERY different to the first series

In great news for those of us who binge-watched season one of Dirty John in a weekend, there’s a brand new season of the thriller coming back to our screens soon.

Based on the breakout Los Angeles Times podcast of the same name by journalist Christopher Goffard, the gripping eight-part series launched on Netflix earlier in the year, and had us on the edge of our seats with the terrifying real-life story of master manipulator, John Meehan.

Read on to find out everything we know about the new series so far.

What’s it about?

Dirty John tells the true story of the notorious sociopath, stalker and con-artist, John Meehan, who meets interior designer and single mum Debra Newell on a dating site before fooling her into a whirlwind marriage.

Unbeknownst to Newell, Meehan was in fact a criminal with multiple restraining orders against him and a hidden drug addiction, as well as an elaborate deception that he worked as a doctor.

As fans of the show will already know, Meehan was killed in self-defence by Debra’s daughter Terra after the family endured months of abuse and manipulation, so the new instalment is unlikely to revive the original story.

We will, however, get to meet a brand new cast and plot, according to Deadline, who confirmed that season two will be “a different and self-contained story, with details to come at a later date.”

When does it air?

There’s no word yet on a release date for season two, but while you’re waiting, season one of Dirty John is available to stream now on Netflix.

Anything else?

As it happens, Deadline reports that Netflix will produce a new companion docu-series investigating the real life of Dirty John, featuring one-to-one interviews with the people he deceived, in the style of Netflix’s other true-crime documentary, Abducted in Plain Sight.

The project will be produced by Herzog & Co and Los Angeles Times Studios with Mark Herzog and Christopher G. Cowen serving as executive producers.

Dirty John is available to stream on Netflix now.

Here’s everything else to watch on Netflix while we wait…
