Demi Lovato shares empowering message detailing 'daily' eating disorder battle

Demi Lovato shared an empowering message with her Instagram followers on Wednesday as she continues her “daily” struggle with an eating disorder.

The singer, 28, posted a boomerang image of a cup with the message “I am worth it” captioned on it. It also had a stylised heart which is associated with the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) in the United States.

She wrote a lengthy post alongside the snap which read: “This is the @neda symbol for eating disorder recovery.

“I painted this at @colormemine years ago. Even though I was in the throes of my eating disorder, I still made this in hopes that I would truly believe it some day. I still struggle. Daily.

“There are periods of time where I forget about my food struggles and other times it’s all I think about. Still.”

She continued: “But that is what ED recovery looks like for some people and I still have hope that someday I won’t think about it anymore.

“For now my mug reminds me that I am worth it, and today I believe it.”

The singer’s eating disorder battle was first public knowledge in 2010 when the star received treatment for bulimia.

She has often discussed her battles since then and most recently released a YouTube documentary series called Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil, which also looked at her substance abuse issues.

In 2020, Demi told Ellen DeGeneres: “My bulimia got really bad. I asked for help, and I didn’t receive the help that I needed.

“So, I was stuck in this, like, unhappy position. Here I am sober, and I’m thinking to myself, ‘I’m six years sober, but I’m miserable. I’m even more miserable than when I was drinking. Why am I sober?”

Fans of the singer were quick to praise her Instagram post with many commenting “you’re worth it”.

NEDA also replied to the Sorry Not Sorry singer. The organisation wrote: “Thank you Demi for being open and honest about your ongoing struggle.

“ED recovery is not linear and this post is an important reminder to take it one day at a time. We are so glad your NEDA mug serves as a reminder that YOU ARE WORTH IT!!”
