Arsenal had started the game much the better side and had threatened multiple times early on.
Manchester United had their own big chance early, though, when Luke Shaw crossed for Romelu Lukaku – but the Belgian could only hit the bar.
The Gunners soon found themselves ahead, though, thanks to Xhaka who took aim from 25 yards.
The Swiss midfielder’s shot managed to dip and swerve, wrong-footing David de Gea, who looked devastated as the ball flew past him.
