Dan Walker: ‘Just an opinion’ BBC star attacked after controversial World Cup tweet

On Sunday, the Lionesses took on Cameroon in the crunch knockout tie and although they won, Dan tweeted that the referee had lost control. Tweeting to his 569,000 followers, Dan questioned the referee’s ability to keep control of the game. Quickly after his tweet, one user hit back at Dan over his criticism of the referee.

The user wrote: “Dan the ref hasn’t caused the mess, the Cameroon players have.

“Please direct your advice at those causing the mess not the people appointed to clear the mess up.

“We don’t blame you for how the BBC have decided to charge the over 75s for the licence fee.”

Not to be drawn on the BBC’s licence fee decision, Dan responded by tweeting about the players’ responsibility in the game.

Tweeting to his followers, Dan wrote: “We are inundated with your examples of puppy-dog eyes this morning.

“Are you easily manipulated?

“I am a sucker for our Winnie when she gives me this face.”

Over the weekend, Dan also took to his Instagram to criticise a school’s decision to band the word “like” shortly after it was used 76 times Love Island.

Copthorne Primary has also banned single word replies to questions, a move backed by the Education Minister.

Dan responded to the news by posting the “embarrassed” emoji.

Addressing his 79,000 followers he asked: “If you could get rid of one overused word or phrase what would it be?”

BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One at 6am.
