CORRIE fans have slammed the show claiming it is too light-hearted and like a “Carry On film” after previously moaning about the amount of death and destruction.
Previous producer Kate Oates received bucketloads of abuse for turning the Street into a blood-soaked ghetto with drugs, sexual abuse and a murder spree.
After several graphic and shocking storylines, including the grooming and sexual abuse of Bethany Platt, fans begged ITV bosses to return of the Street’s renowned gentle humour.
However, many now think executives have gone too far with silly scenes and it is has become “ridiculous”.
Fans are even demanding Kate be reinstated as new boss Iain MacLeon is blamed for turning Corrie into “Carry on Film.”
Die hard Weatherfield followers have taken to fans’ forums and social media to vent their anger about the comedy capers up in the fictional northern area.
One wrote: “It is just silly now – like a Carry on Film but without the excellent actors of the comic timing.”
Another said: “What’s happening to this show?? Emmerdale is wiping the floor with it!! The story lines are rubbish in Corrie now it’s like a comedy show!”
While one added: “Coronation street is getting ridiculous. Bring back Kate Oates. Current boss of Corrie has obviously tried to make it more light hearted but the story lines are just rubbish now.”
One fans called Shirley wrote: “This is absolute rubbish! Even Norris’ return is a farce! #coronationstreet.”
And another viewer said: “My fave soap is on the decline really really quickly get some good script writers in fast it’s become farce not weekly drama.”
In one fan forum, viewers have claimed a dip in quality could be to blame for the recent increase in cast exits, as seven stars have confirmed to be leaving the hit soap in the last few months.
While show insiders say that “poor wages, long hours and a poisonous atmosphere” are to blame for the recent increase in cast exits, many fans think the decision to move from five episodes a week to six has backfired, resulting in a dip in quality.
One fan wrote: “Coronation Street should never have gone to 6 episodes. It’s really showing its decline.”
And another added: “Six episodes is killing the cast and crew and it’s painfully showing through in the quality of what we’re seeing right now.”
