Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot and Homecoming, wrote and directed the adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s novel.

The story follows a couple as they head out to a remote corner of Long Island and plans for a relaxing break soon go awry.

The owners of the rental arrive in a panic reporting a sudden blackout throughout the city.

With all forms of communication down, the couple aren’t sure what to believe.

And as they’re forced to shelter together, themes of race, class and parenthood are tackled and explored.

Julia plays the wife in the visiting couple, while Mahershala is the rental owner.

But viewers have called the film a “complete waste of time” as they took to X, formerly Twitter, in their droves.

One fumed, “Just watched Leave The World Behind…. wtf was that ending?! F**king waste of time.”

Someone else raged, “I don’t care how good the book might be (I’ve never read it) but Leave the World Behind was probably the biggest waste of time watching a movie I can remember…. Yikes!”

Another agreed, “Doing the world a favor and letting you all know that the new Julia Roberts movie “leave the world behind” is one of the worst movies you’ll ever watch. Don’t waste your time.”

A fourth wrote, “Famm, ‘Leave the world behind’ movie IS SO USELESS wtff??? What kinda ending was that, what a waste of time.

“ATTENTION: Do not watch the new movie on Netflix “Leave the World Behind”… This was by far the most pointless movie I have ever seen in my entire life and I’m actually upset that I’ll never get those 2.5 hours back… im livid.”

One more chimed in with, “Decided to watch LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND with my partner. At minute 9:02, he turns at me, looks me dead in the eye and says: ‘Not even 10 minutes in and already three song montages? I can’t take this anymore!'”
