Codemasters opens new studio in Birmingham

Codemasters has opened a new studio in Birmingham, UK.

The new office in the Grade II listed Alpha Tower – which was formerly the headquarters of regional television company ATV – is said to be a “state-of-the-art development studio” for the company’s F1 development team, which had previously been based in Tricorn House. The office space reportedly spans 14,000 square feet and “has been equipped with the latest technology including a D-Box race simulator which delivers the ultimate driving experience”.

“Birmingham continues to be a hub for attracting talented developers and, as our studio continues to expand, making Alpha Tower our new home is testament to the quality of the people who want to work for Codemasters in this incredible city,” said Ian Flatt, head of studio, Codemasters Birmingham. “Creativity is at the heart of every decision we make and we wanted a new home that inspires people, offers our employees the best working facilities and enables them to fulfil their potential.”

F1 2019 will ship earlier than usual this year, launching worldwide on June 28th, 2019.

Few UK developers have the history of Codemasters. “For the last four years we have grown top line margins and bottom line, year-on-year, there hasn’t been a single red number over four years,” CEO Frank Sagnier told MCV last year. And while he can’t talk about the publicly-listed company’s current year, the market’s outlook is for more of the same.

“Within the past four years we’ve almost tripled our business in revenue,” he added. “And we went from losing money, to now making a significant profit.”

“The biggest [racing] games right now on each platform are exclusives, but a lot of people are very excited about multi-platform, and we’re multi-platform,” Sagnier said. “We are platform agnostic, we sell content, we want to reach as many people on as many platforms as possible. We don’t want to limit ourselves.”
