Edinson Cavani may pick Chelsea over Man Utd

Edinson Cavani may prefer to join Chelsea or Tottenham ahead of Manchester United if he has a desire to keep playing Champions League football this season, says Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol.

Cavani has handed in a transfer request at Paris Saint-Germain and wants to leave six months before his contract expires at the Parc des Princes.

“What we are being told is funds are available for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if they want to sign somebody short term,” Solhekol said.

“The problem is there are not very many players available, certainly not very many players available of the standard that Manchester United would be looking for.

“You say somebody like Edinson Cavani who’s put in a transfer request at PSG, he might be available.

“But he’s got other options. You would think that he would want to stay in the Champions League, obviously Manchester United can’t offer him that.

“So would he prefer hypothetically to go somewhere like Chelsea or Spurs, where he would get Champions League football?”

Chelsea want striker

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard made it clear to club chiefs before this transfer window that he wanted to sign a striker, says transfer expert Ian McGarry. Lampard is said to hold “fear” that Tammy Abraham will get injured or be burnt out this season.

Abraham is Chelsea’s top scorer this term with 13 Premier League goals, starting 21 of the 23 Premier League games.

Olivier Giroud has been frozen out by Lampard and looks set to leave this month as he goes in search of more regular first-team football.

Michy Batshuayi, meanwhile, is yet to start a Premier League games under the Chelsea head coach.

So Lampard told Blues chiefs that he wants a new forward to be brought in this month.

“Chelsea have been told by Frank Lampard, well in advance of this particular window, that he needs backup for Tammy Abraham, who he fears playing every game will either get injured or will burn out to a degree,” McGarry said on the Transfer Window podcast.

“Obviously it’s not going to be as serious as that may sound given his age etc, etc.”

Chelsea pair could leave

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has given an update on a couple of exits which could happen at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “There’s not much more to say on Olivier Giroud.

“We know there have been discussions and the idea that he may move on but it needs to be right for everyone and at this point it isn’t yet.

“Victor Moses is coming back from his loan with a view to going elsewhere and those talks are ongoing as well.”

Wilfried Zaha latest

Former Crystal Palace star John Salako believes Wilfried Zaha will stay at Chelsea through the January transfer window.

“I can’t see it happening,” he said, speaking to Love Sport Radio.

“I went into this transfer window thinking he wants to go, he would like to go and maybe play Champions League football, he deserves that, he has earned the right. And I think Palace fans would wish him well if he wanted to do that.

“But I would love him to stay. He is just so important, especially when you see the injuries now, with [Andros] Townsend and [Jeffrey] Schlupp.

“He is so vital to the side, and I would love him to stay, at least until the summer, and it looks like to me he is going to stay until the end of the season.”

Moussa Dembele bid plan

Manchester United are planning a £43million bid for Lyon striker Moussa Dembele following the injury to Marcus Rashford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign a striker and is planning an offer for the former Celtic man who is also wanted by Chelsea.

United will be without Rashford for at least six weeks with a double stress fracture of his back.

And that means the Red Devils are looking to add a striker before the January 31 deadline.

FootMercato claim United have had scouts watching Dembele in recent weeks and could now make their move for the forward with an initial £43m offer.

Timo Werner would prefer Liverpool

Liverpool and Chelsea target Timo Werner would prefer a move to Anfield than Stamford Bridge, according to a report in Germany.

Werner has been linked with a transfer to the Premier League since last season but his contract isn’t up until 2023.

Werner has scored 24 goals in 25 appearances for Leipzig this season and is impressing clubs across Europe with his all-round forward play.

But reports suggest that Chelsea and Liverpool are the frontrunners for his signature.

Frank Lampard’s Blues need a forward, with the futures of both Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi both uncertain.

Liverpool, however, have a stacked front line, with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane chipping in with their fair share of goals this term.

According to Bild in Germany, though, Werner would prefer a move to Liverpool to play under Jurgen Klopp.

Frank Lampard on signing striker

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has responded to a question asking him if he will look to sign a striker more urgently following the defeat to Newcastle at the weekend.

He said: “I don’t think it hastens it. We didn’t do any business in the summer window so at this point it’s something we’ve seen as being a little problem over some of our home games where we haven’t scored.

“There are two things to do – firstly, work hard with the group here and secondly, if we can improve in areas of goalscoring then it’s something for sure we have to look at.

“Sometimes as a team you can work to get yourself up the pitch towards the 18-yard box and create chances but then you do rely on those moments of killer instinct, being calm to put the ball away and it’s something we’ve fallen short of.

“You can practise it and we certainly need to get better at if we want to continue to look upwards because there’s a slight ceiling if you can’t do that last bit. It’s all good getting into the 18-yard box a lot but to finish the job is the gold and what makes the difference.”

Victor Moses exit

Chelsea defender Victor Moses is understood to be closing in on a loan switch to Inter Milan.

The Premier League winning full-back has returned to Stamford Bridge after ending a temporary stint at Fenerbahce.

And Lampard admitted the wide man could well be on his way out.

“On Victor Moses, he’s obviously coming back from his loan with a view to going elsewhere, and those talks are ongoing as well,” said Lampard.

Edinson Cavani to Chelsea?

Frank Lampard has refused to rule out a move for PSG striker Edinson Cavani.

Chelsea are in the market for a striker to provide support and ease the burden on Tammy Abraham, who’s scored twice in his last eight top-flight games.

Uruguay international Cavani, who turns 33 next month, has found opportunities limited this season and is now keen to call time on his Parc des Princes stay.

‘He is a great player, I played against him,” Lampard said when quizzed about links to Cavani. “I am not sure what the situation is there though. He has experience, sometimes it’s good to bring in experience. We’ll see.”

Edinson Cavani request

PSG’s all-time record goalscorer Edinson Cavani has told the French giants he wants to leave, the club’s sporting director Leonardo has revealed.

The Uruguay international, who turns 33 next month, has found opportunities limited this season and is now keen to call time on his Parc des Princes stay.

Speaking after PSG’s Coupe de France win at Lorient on Sunday, Leonardo confirmed Cavani’s decision and said they had already turned down a bid from Atletico Madrid for the striker.

“It is also true that we had an offer from Atletico Madrid and we did not accept it. On a financial level, it was not high enough compared to the value of the player,” Leonardo said.

“We are listening (to Cavani). After that, I honestly don’t know how it will all end. Right now we are a little more distant from Atletico because we’ve not had any contact for the past few days. Today nothing is clear.”

The France Under-21 international has been linked with Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid in recent weeks.

And he’s been unequivocal in his desire to secure a move elsewhere – but not in the January transfer window.

“I want to do a full season here, yes. It is not time to leave – I don’t want to leave with regrets.”

Jadon Sancho interest

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho remains Chelsea’s top target.

That’s according to Goal, who claims the club are prepared break their transfer record to lure the England international to Stamford Bridge.

It’s believed Manchester United’s interest in the 19-year-old has made Roman Abramovich and Co. more willing to submit an offer well in excess of £70million.

Sancho shares close ties with England colleagues Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham and that is reportedly another draw for the attacker, who supports Chelsea.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Inter were not willing to sign Giroud until they offloaded Matteo Politano, who looked destined to join Roma.

The 26-year-old’s proposed move to the Italian capital looks in danger of falling through, though.

Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta suggested on Friday that Giroud’s arrival could depend on Politano’s exit.
