Chelsea boss Frank Lampard gets much-needed boost after nightmare start at Stamford Bridge

Rudiger could even be in line for a return at Norwich on Saturday, as Lampard moves to solve his defensive problems.

But Hudson-Odoi, who has been out since April after rupturing an achilles tendon, will not feature – even though he returned to training with the first team on Tuesday.

Chelsea now expect the winger to return to action in around three weeks.

German international defender Rudiger, also out since April after surgery on a knee problem, came safely through Chelsea Under-23’s 3-0 win over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

The big centre-back was watched by Frank Lampard as he came through the entire 90 minutes unscathed.

If there is no reaction in training this week, the Chelsea manager is considering bringing the defender back for the trip to Norwich on Saturday.

Chelsea are yet to win in three competitive games under Lampard and have conceded seven goals so far, so Rudiger’s return on Monday came as a major boost for the Blues manager ahead of a tricky match.

Striker Michy Batshuayi, who has also not figured this season so far as Lampard has used Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham in attack, scored two goals in the game and is set to be recalled to the squad.

The Belgian has told friends he is ready to fight for his place in the squad and is not looking for a move despite not featuring so far.

Chelsea, in any case, will not sell or loan him out while under a transfer ban which is set to stop them signing anyone until next summer.

But one player they have allowed to leave is Italian full-back Davide Zappacosta, who is joining Roma on loan for the season with a view to an eventual permanent transfer.

Zappacosta joined Chelsea from Torino for £25million two years ago but has failed to make an impression under either Antonio Conte or Maurizio Sarri, Lampard’s predecessors.

Lampard intends to use another youngster in the highly-rated Reece James, 19, as regular right-back Cesar Azpilicueta’s deputy instead of Zappacosta.

The youngster is currently recovering from ankle surgery and is highly rated having starred for Wigan in the Championship last season.

Chelsea will be determined to bounce back from the nightmare of back-to-back defeats to Manchester United and Liverpool, which were followed by a 1-1 home draw against Leicester.

Norwich, though, proved they are no pushovers by bouncing back from an opening day loss to Liverpool by beating Newcastle 3-1 on Saturday.
