Atletico Madrid and Atalanta were the final two teams in the Champions League last 16 draw on Wednesday night. Manchester City were victorious in their final group game but Tottenham were well beaten in Germany.
City and Spurs’ spots in the knockout rounds were already secured but City ran out 4-1 winners in Croatia to end their group stage campaign on a high.
Gabriel Jesus scored a hat-trick while Phil Foden was also on the scoresheet, despite the fact Dani Olmo had put the hosts in the lead.
Pep Guardiola’s side will be seeded in Monday’s draw courtesy of topping Group C.
Meanwhile, Spurs fell to defeat in Bavaria, with Ryan Sessegnon scoring after starting. The England international was one of few positives for the Londoners as they lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich.
Former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho was among those in the goals for Bayern with a trademark curling effort.
Joining City were Atalanta, who are in the last 16 despite having never played in the Champions League before this season.
They had lost all of their first three games but winning their last two, beating Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 away from home on Wednesday night, saw them go through.
Elsewhere, Atletico defeated Lokomotiv Moscow to be the final team in the draw – after Kieran Trippier missed an early penalty.
Joao Felix then fired in from the spot soon after as Atletico, who have reached two finals since 2014, came out on top in Madrid.
Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain were resounding winners and Real Madrid also won away at Club Brugge.
Olympiakos ended their campaign by securing Europa League football with a first win while Juventus won again, also consigning Bayer Leverkusen to Europe’s second-tier competition.
