Celtic boss Neil Lennon 'set to be sacked' after club chiefs hold crisis talks

Celtic boss Neil Lennon is set to depart the Scottish champions with immediate effect today, reports suggest.

Lennon has been under pressure for most of the season after a torrid campaign for the Parkhead side.

Celtic went into the campaign hoping for a tenth league title in a row, but have come up short to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.

The reigning champions are 18 points behind Rangers in the league table, and are at risk of seeing their Old Firm rivals secure the title at Parkhead in March.

And Lennon has paid the price, with the Daily Record reporting he was told on Tuesday that he will lose his job.

Lennon had continuously fought for his position at Celtic, and had responded furiously to suggestions his time was up.

But the club’s board apparently held crisis talks after Sunday’s defeat to Ross County, and decided to part ways with the club icon.

Assistant manager John Kennedy is set to take over until the end of the season, and there are suggestions that a backroom reshuffle could see club captain Scott Brown take up a role.

The Celtic senior squad is yet to be informed of the club’s decision.

Players will apparently be told on Wednesday morning that the call has been made to fire Lennon, who has been at the club since February 2019.

Celtic’s board had always remained loyal to Lennon and had been eager to give him time.

But it is believed that Sunday’s defeat to Ross County was the final straw for chief executive Peter Lawweell and majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

Following the disappointing 1-0 loss, Lennon walked away from an interview with the BBC after being asked about a club rebuild in the summer.

Lennon reacted angrily to suggestions he might not be able to rebuild the squad and battle for the title again next season.
