Casualty fans were left beside themselves on tonight’s programme.

Nurse Duffy (Cathy Shipton) was given her test results, following self-diagnosing herself with dementia last year.

And her worst fears were confirmed when it was revealed she was in the early stages of vascular dementia.

Duffy was encouraged to inform her employers of her health diagnosis and talk to someone for support.

Shaken by the news and aware she couldn’t keep the news to herself, Duffy confided in her estranged husband Charlie.

Charlie (Derek Thompson) – who works as Duffy’s line manager – was left visibly shaken by the news and struggled to find the right words to say to her.

Charlie decided to take a practical approach to the situation and opted to take Duffy off night shifts, as well as lightening her workload.

Casualty fans were devastated to learn of Duffy’s plight and rushed to Twitter to share their thoughts.

One viewer said: “Oh dear, poor Duffy. That’s so awful.”

While another continued: “My heart breaks for Duffy.”

A third added: “I feel so sorry for Duffy!”

Will Duffy’s devastating news bring her and Charlie back together again?

Elsewhere on the show, there was a new face at the hospital.

Dr Archie Hudson (Genesis Lynea) joined the Emergeny Department as Connie ‘s (Amanda Mealing) protégé.

But despite impressing with her quick-thinking and firm but fair approach with a particularly hostile patient, Archie’s reputation caught up with her.

She was called into a meeting with Connie who asked her why her 360 Performance Appraisal contradicted her reference.

Her appraisal said she was “on her way to the top,” but her appraisal report said she was “arrogant” and had “a bad attitude”.

Archie insisted Connie had nothing to worry about, but will she be able to prove herself?
