Cape View Clifton review: a luxurious home-away-from-home in Cape Town

Where is it?

Sitting pretty on the steep slopes of Lion’s Head overlooking the Atlantic Seaboard, in one of Cape Town’s most exclusive enclaves – Bantry Bay, is a discreet and luxurious hidden treasure. Cape View Clifton is a delightful surprise in every way. What was once a private home is now a heavenly boutique guesthouse with seven suites each of which offer staggeringly beautiful views over Cape Town’s iconic and pristine Clifton and Camps Bay beaches. Laid-back and perfectly refined, this is one very sophisticated and impressive beach hideaway, and the perfect base for exploring all the beauty and wonder that Cape Town has to offer.

The Atlantic can be viewed from all almost everywhere in the boutique hotel (Cape View Clifton)

Style

Jess Latimer, a born and bred South African interior designer (now living in London), and her family generously decided to turn their private home into an intimate guesthouse to share with others (lucky for us). A comfortable and luxurious home-away-from-home from which to enjoy the stunning backdrop of the 12 Apostles and beyond. The vibe here is laid-back and relaxed, with Jess’ style being contemporary without being ultra-modern. There is a definite sense of sophistication here.

With colonial touches throughout, the colour palette is neutral, with beautiful art and fresh flowers providing pops of colour. The suites all come up with floor to ceiling windows and beautiful crisp white linens. Everything is immaculate.

The entrance to Cape View Clifton is discreet (just ring a doorbell and you will be let in), and there is a small gym on the top floor with exceptional views over the ocean. Downstairs in the communal area, breakfast is served each morning either inside or on the expansive sun deck. Featuring a little lap pool as well, this is the perfect place for a dip pre or post breakfast, before heading down to beautiful Clifton 4th beach for a swim in the ocean. Cape View Clifton is an idyllic place to stay.

Food & Drink

One of the highlights of our stay at Cape View Clifton was the breakfast offering each morning.

Céleste and Sol who run the kitchen are kind, warm and very happy to help tailor a breakfast to your individual needs, in addition to the impressive spread of local produce that is already laid out for you as well. The vibe is relaxed, and you can choose to eat wherever you like – in the dining room, or out on the incredible pool deck overlooking the ocean (you could also opt for in-room dining if you would prefer).

Breakfast is included in your stay, but you can also choose to have a special lunch or dinner prepared for you by the cooks if that tickles your fancy. If you are lucky, Céleste might even sing for you (she has a beautiful voice). Nothing is too much trouble for these delightful people, and the breakfast experience – sitting out in the sun, overlooking the ocean (pre or post a dip in the small pool) – was our favourite way to start the day. There are also delightful homemade cakes and other treats available for your to help yourself to all day.

All the rooms are light and airy (Cape View Clifton)

Which room?

Of the seven lovely suites at Cape View Clifton, each offers a stunning, uninterrupted view over the Atlantic. They are all inviting and spacious, with lush interiors and delightful little touches such as their Africola skincare products (one of South Africa‘s finest skincare brands), beautiful little bone bowls next to the beds, and fresh Protea flowers (South Africa’s national flower). We recommending booking one of the Deluxe Suites for its larger living space, and great-sized balcony. All rooms however are spacious, light and airy, with impossibly comfortable beds – a haven for relaxation. For a family or group of friends travelling together, Cape View Clifton also has the Bakoven Beach House – an exclusive-use three bedroom villa, just down the road.

Best for?

Couples, definitely. Children (aged five and over) are welcome, but we think it is better to leave them at home.
