Burger King to open 10 more branches for deliveries

BURGER King is to open 10 more branches across the UK so more customers can get their favourite meals delivered to their homes.

The chain has already opened six of its 550 branches, which have been offering a limited menu to customers through delivery services Just Eat and Deliveroo.

The next branches to open will be in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Dundee and Merton in London, the chain’s chief executive Alasdair Murdoch told The Mail on Sunday, although exact locations haven’t been shared yet.

Unfortunately though, only customers who live within a certain area close to the restaurants will be able to get food delivered, so it’s worth checking the Deliveroo or Just Eat apps to see if you qualify.

The six sites that have already reopened have seen huge demand from customers who’ve been without their favourite meals for three weeks.

Last week, delivery drivers were forced to queue at the drive-thru at one branch in Coventry for more than an hour to pick up customers’ orders.

Burger King makes a loss on each delivery because the delivery companies take a commission on each sale, Mr Murdoch said.

But shareholders agree that it was worth taking the hit to help keep the brand visible.

A string of new safety measures are being enforced at the reopened branches to protect employees, such as masks and gloves for all workers, and offering training on how to run a hygienic kitchen whilst still maintaining social distancing rules.

Not everything on the menu will be available to order either, but classics such as the chicken Royale, bacon double cheeseburger and whopper will be.

It’s the next phase in its plan to eventually reopen all stores.

Burger King was among the many fast food chains, including McDonald’sNando’s and Greggs, to temporarily shut up shop after the government ordered all non-essential shops to close, even though they were allowed to continue to offer a takeaway service.

This was to encourage Brits to stay at home to limit the spread of COVID-19 to relieve the pressure on the NHS.

Now, some chains are starting to reopen a small number of branches to offer takeaway services in trials to keep the businesses – and the economy – ticking.

KFC and Burger King have already opened a handful of branches respectively, while reports on Friday revealed that McDonald’s was looking to open again by mid-May for delivery and drive-thru orders.

Today, Greggs told The Sun that it too is looking at opening a small number of shops in a trial that could be expanded nationwide.
