Bruno Fernandes appears in a confident mood as Manchester United step up their preparations ahead of next weekend’s clash with Tottenham and claims the squad have been showing ‘really good’ signs during their ‘intense’ training sessions.

The 25-year-old midfielder hit the ground running after completing a move from Sporting in the January transfer window, racking up three goals and four assists in his opening opening nine appearances, but the coronavirus crisis stopped him in his tracks in March.

United are yet to suffer defeat since Fernandes’ arrival but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be wary of his side’s unbeaten streak coming under threat next weekend against a Spurs team desperate to bounce back from a dismal run of results.

The Portugal international – who was named Premier League Player of the Month for February – is a shoo-in to start in north London but Solskjaer has some tough selection decisions to make elsewhere, with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay and Fred all battling for a place in United’s midfield.

Asked about the current mood at the club, Fernandes told the official United App: ‘We are really happy,

‘Things are really intense, really good.

‘We wait for this moment because we like to play football and we are really enjoying this time.’

Fernandes insists United’s coaching staff and players are attempting to maintain a sense of normality in training despite the difficulties and complications caused by the pandemic.

‘The difference is just to arrive at different hours and not doing the same as we did in the past,’ he added.

‘But the most important thing is that we can train and that we can be together in the training ground, and to train together.’

The Red Devils held an 11 vs 11 training match at Old Trafford last weekend and, according to Luke Shaw, it provided a great opportunity for the squad to experience playing at an empty stadium.

‘There have been a lot of different things circulating on social media and I’m happy to set the record straight: it did end 4-4 and I did score twice!’ the United left-back told MUTV.

‘Also on my team, Bruno [Fernandes] got one and Jamo [Daniel James] got one, while, on the other team, [Marcus] Rashy got two and so did Odion [Ighalo].

‘To be fair, my first goal was decent. It was from a great cross by Bruno and my volley went straight in. I was happy with it.

‘My other one was just getting forward, Juan [Mata] played it to me on the edge of the box, I took a touch and shot in. It was quite an open game, as you can probably gather, with a lot of space, since it was the first game back.’

On United’s upcoming encounter with Tottenham, Shaw said: ‘It’s a massive fixture and I think everyone on both sides has got full-strength squads now, so it should be a really good game.

‘It’s definitely one we’re all looking forward to. ‘In training, we’re looking really sharp, really fit and ready to go. We’re looking forward to it.

‘We just need to pick up where we left off, doing the things we were doing before the break, and hopefully we can climb towards the Champions League spots, which is what we really want.

‘We went into lockdown having built up some real momentum, went 11 games unbeaten and we were playing well.

‘We weren’t just scoring goals but, defensively, everyone was doing a really good job too, not conceding many and teams were finding it hard to play against us. We’ve just got to remember what we were doing before.

‘We’ve got our full squad back now, so hopefully we can push on even more with the quality that’s going to be added from those returning players.’
