BRITAIN will legalise cannabis inside 15 years, a cross-party group of MPs said yesterday.
The trio spoke out after a research trip to Canada where recreational use of the drug is allowed.
Tory Jonathan Djanogly predicted legalisation in ten to 15 years.
Lib Dem Sir Norman Lamb, possibly the first MP to take a cannabis product on camera, and Labour’s David Lammy estimated five years.
Sir Norman had previously led his party’s decision to back the legalisation of cannabis.
Mr Lammy moved away from his party’s official position to backing legalisation.
He said: “I want the market legalised, regulated and taken away from crime gangs. I want to see the strength of the stuff reduced, labelled and properly organised in this country.”
Cannabis became illegal in the UK in 1928 and it remains illegal to possess, grow, distribute, sell or grow it.
However, it can be prescribed for medicinal purposes.
