The annual Brit Awards are taking place tonight, bringing together the biggest names in music with this year’s show promising more stage performances than before.

The awards ceremony, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, will be slightly different from previous years as organisers have promised more music and fewer acceptance speeches.

They have eliminated several categories, such as British artist video of the year and international group and have dropped two of their special achievement awards (global success reward and outstanding contribution to music).

This year’s glittering Brits line-up will include performances from Billie Eilish, Celeste, Harry Styles, Lewis Capaldi, Mabel and Stormzy.

There’s exciting news for film fans too as Billie Eilish will perform the new Bond theme song No Time to Die, for the first time ever.

So, what time is it on, who is hosting, who is nominated, and how long has the awards ceremony been running?

When did the Brits start and who has won the most Brits?

The Brits started 42 years ago in October 1977, however it didn’t become an annual event until 1982.

This year’s ceremony will be its 40th, which is why they are celebrating their ruby anniversary this year.

To date, Robbie Williams holds the record for the most Brit Awards, with 18 gongs under his belt.

Robbie, 46, has won 13 times as a solo artist and five as part of Take That.

His wins include British single of the year which he took home for Angels (1999), She’s the One (2000), Rock DJ (2001) and British male solo artist, which he won in 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

As part of Take That, he scooped the British single of the year prize three times; in 1993 for Could it Be Magic, again the following year with Pray and in 1996 for single Back for Good.

Robbie had already quit Take That by the 1996 Brit Awards however, leaving in 1995 to pursue his solo career, but the track had been released before he left the band.

The Back For Good music video was the last Take That music video to feature Robbie, until he rejoined the band again in 2010.

The Brit Awards 2020 will be broadcast on ITV from 8pm this evening
