Bridgerton season 3 explained: What happened to Marina Thompson?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Bridgerton.

Bridgerton has returned for its third outing but what happened to Colin Bridgerton’s ex Marina Thompson?

Netflix’s biggest romantic drama is back with Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington’s (Nicola Coughlan) love story at the heart of season three.

But before feelings began to deepen between the lifelong friends, Colin was betrothed to Marina Thompson (Ruby Baker), a far-off cousin of the Featherington family.

What happened to Marina Thomspon in Bridgerton?

Marina Thompson was introduced in the first season when she was sent to stay with Penelope and her family due to her scandalous pregnancy.

During her time in Mayfair, Marina and Colin fell for one another and were soon engaged to be married.

However, Marina later changed her mind as she felt the need to find herself an older husband to look after her and the baby.

She then briefly returns for Bridgerton season three when Colin goes to visit Marina at her new estate that she shares with husband Sir Phillip Crane (Chris Fulton).

While it is obvious that Marina is unhappy, she tells Colin to move on with his life and this is how her story comes to an end onscreen.

Fans may have wanted to see Baker reprise the role for the third outing but this isn’t going to happen as the actress chose to leave the show behind.

Baker explained to Digital Spy: “I wouldn’t return to Bridgerton because A) it wouldn’t be my choice, and B) when I did Bridgerton – obviously this is very much in the public knowledge and stuff like that – I had a mental health crisis.

“It’s not going to happen, I’ve done my bit.”

The Bridgerton star previously spoke out on while the show was one of the best moments of her life, it was also a time where she was suffering personally.

Given how Marina’s story is brought to an end in Julia Quinn’s novels as well, it’s understandable why she would not want to return.

In the second season, it was clear to see Marina wasn’t happy with her new life and this continues in the novels.

As a result, she ends up attempting to take her own life by drowning in a nearby lake.

And even though her husband Crane tries to rescue her, Marina dies a few days later of lung fever.

Bridgerton is available to watch on Netflix.
