Sunak says we ‘don’t need a trade deal’
Rishi Sunak, chief secretary to the Treasury, has said “we don’t need to” secure a trade deal with the EU.
He said the Government wants a free trade agreement, but that shouldn’t mean following all its rules.
Asked about needing such an agreement, he said there are a range of options of trade in future.
Mr Sunak said the Government wants a Canada-style free trade agreement.
He told Sky:
We won’t sit here and be told that we have to follow each and every EU rule.
Mr Sunak said the EU had seemed open to a Canada-style agreement previously and the Government wanted to “take them up on that offer”.
“We don’t want to be a rule follower,” he added.
