BREAKING: Godfather actor Carmine Caridi dies aged 85

Carmine Caridi had been rushed to Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles where he slipped into a coma and later passed away.

The star played Carmine Rosato in the iconic Godfather films, first appearing in the second part of The Godfather which was released in 1974.

He also starred as Albert Volpe in the series’ third instalment.

It is not yet known what triggered Carmine’s health problem which led to his coma, but he tragically never regained consciousness while in hospital.

Carmine also acted in a number of other hit TV shows including Starsky and Hutch, Taxi, Fame and NYPD.

In NYPD, Caridi played Detective Vince Gotelli and starred as Calvin Richards in the cult movie Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park.

During his acting education, he became the first ever person to be expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

He was banished from the school for copyright infringement.

The Academy said on January 13, 2004 that it had identified a copy of the film Something’s Gotta Give, which had been published illegally on the internet.

The copy carried a watermark which had come from a video sent to Carmine at his role as an Oscar vote.

Carmine was born on January 23, 1934 and died on May 29, 2019.

Tributes have poured in for the star, with one fan tweeting: “RIP Carmine, you were amazing in the Godfather films!”
