Boyz n The Hood director John Singleton has reportedly died aged 51.

The star was seriously ill in hospital after suffering a stroke last week.

Fox 4 confirmed the news that Singleton passed away on Monday, with their critic Shawn Edwards saying that his family told him the news.

However, TMZ have conflicting reports, saying that the star was on life support.

The actor, producer and screenwriter was already in hospital when he suffered a stroke last Wednesday, with his family saying he was in intensive care.

The Singleton family issued a statement to Metro.co.uk, which read: ‘On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital.

‘John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care.

‘We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues.’

However, his daughter denied reports Singleton had fallen into a coma, saying that the family were optimistic about his recovery.

When nominated for the Best Director Oscar for Boyz n The Hood in 1992, he was the youngest person (aged 24) to be nominated for the award, as well as the first African American.

He also directed Poetic Justice (1993), Shaft (2000) and 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), as well as episodes of Empire and American Crime Story.
