'Boris Johnson isn't in the clear over Jennifer Arcuri dealings yet'

While Boris Johnson will not face a criminal probe into his dealings with Jennifer Arcuri he is not yet in the clear.

The Prime Minister still faces an inquiry by the Greater London Authority into whether he abused his power when Mayor of London.

This is not the first time his conduct has been called into question.

In the space of a few months he was twice rapped over the knuckles by the Commons Committee on Standards for failing to update the register of MPs’ interests.

These incidents may not amount to illegality but they do point to the behaviour of someone with an arrogant attitude towards the rules.

If a Labour politician were to behave in this way the Tories would be frothing at the mouth.

When it is one of their own they claim he is the victim of a political smear.

It is the job of opposition politicians to hold those in power to account.

The fact Mr Johnson resents such scrutiny speaks volumes about his attitude to standards in public life.

Tory reversals

Boris Johnson was challenged by Keir Starmer on Wednesday, on why overseas NHS staff had to pay for their healthcare.

The PM replied he had thought a “great deal” about this and had come to the conclusion the surcharge should stay.

Twenty-four hours later he was forced into a U-turn.

It was the second Government reversal in the space of a few hours, following Priti Patel’s climbdown on excluding low-paid staff from the NHS bereavement fund.

Any right-thinking person should have known from the start these policies were mean-spirited and unjustifiable.

This is especially the case for Mr Johnson, who owes his life to two foreign NHS workers.
