The US has threatened to cut off Britain’s access to its secrets if London goes ahead with the plan as it fears Beijing spymasters would use the state-sponsored firm’s systems to eavesdrop on the UK.

It emerged yesterday that Donald Trump lobbied Boris to lock out Huawei during their talks in No10 on Tuesday night.

The PM has admitted he has not ruled out telling the US President the Chinese firm would be banned.

He said: “I don’t want this country to be unnecessarily hostile to investment from overseas.

“On the other hand, we cannot prejudice our vital national security interests or our ability to co-operate with other Five Eyes security partners.”

Minutes earlier, Mr Trump had branded Huawei’s involvement in 5G networks as “a security danger,” adding: “I spoke to Italy. They look like they are not going to go forward with that.

“We spoke to other countries and they are not going to go forward. Everybody I have spoken to is not going forward.”
