Matera, the 2019 European capital of culture, is used to Hollywood glitterati. Mel Gibson used it as a backdrop for The Passion Of The Christ in 2004.

Now Bond can marvel at the hilltop city’s many attractions.

Located in southern Italy’s Basilicata region, it has enjoyed a magnificent renaissance, emerging as a luxury destination with beautiful beaches and spectacular scenery.

Its historic centre features steep, winding alleyways with old traditional shops while the modern part has piazzas and trattorias.

It is home to the Unesco-listed Sassi cave dwellings, which have evidence of inhabitants as early as 7000BC and were home to locals up until World War Two.

Part of the Sassi have been transformed in to the 5* Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita hotel where guests can stay in one of 18 caves.

The romantic candlelit alcoves and fireplaces are worthy of any 007 date.
