"Beyond awful": The first trailer for new 'Sonic The Hedgehog' movie is already dividing fans

It’s proving divisive…

The first trailer has been released for Sonic The Hedgehog – and it provides our first full look at the iconic SEGA character.

After a character poster previously showed that he’s looking surprisingly human, the first trailer wastes no time in teasing what he’s up against in his first big screen outing.

It’s revealed that Sonic’s powers have caused a power outage across the globe, and it isn’t long before the US government are on his case. Enter Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) – who has been tasked with the job of capturing the titular hero.

While Carrey’s first appearance suggests that he’s taking it back to his slapstick roots, Sonic’s main ally comes in Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), who befriends the character after discovering him in a wooden shack.

Although Carrey appears markedly different to traditional depictions of Dr Robotnik, a brief snippet at the end of the trailer suggests that he’ll be looking a lot more familiar as the film progresses.

Most surprisingly of all, the entire trailer is set to Coolio’s ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ – which seems somewhat unexpected.

So far, it’s dividing fans on social media.

One wrote: “Well this looks… beyond awful. Why did they put the classic sonic-ring collection sound in 3 times without any special effects to go with it? It’s so awkward? Why is this a sonic film and no eggman? It’s just Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey, not Eggman. “

Another said: “The new #SonicMovie trailer was a lot better than I thought. Ben Schwartz does a good job with Sonic and I did find some parts funny. That is just my opinion of course…”

The full trailer comes after the first look at Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik leaked online yesterday.

Sonic The Hedgehog will hit cinemas in November 2019.
