Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick expects "ghost games" will finish season

Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick has said that the only way to resolve the issue surrounding finishing the football season amid the coronavirus pandemic is to have games behind-closed-doors, in what he labelled as ‘ghost games.’

His side is currently communicating via video calls, with players carrying out their individual training at home, rather than their Sabener Strasse training ground.

Flick told German news agency DPA of the toll the coronavirus has had on the squad: “At first it felt like it didn’t correspond to reality.

“We have the team together almost every day, even though this is cyber world.”

In the Bundesliga, clubs have been advised not to continue normal training until April 5 at the earliest, something which Bayern is adhering to.

Bayern Munich are top of the league

“FC Bayern is viewed differently. We would do well to act as a role model.”
Bayern last played a match on March 8, while their game against Chelsea in the Champions Leagues second leg, along with their league games, was postponed not long after.

But despite the uncertainty surrounding the current campaign, Flick is of the belief that the season will continue, though it may mean playing behind-closed-doors.

The 55-year-old said: “I do believe that the season will continue. I’m thinking positively.

“I think everyone realises that ghost games are the only way to do it, to finish the season.

Meanwhile, members of his side – all of whom have agreed to have their salary cut to help charities during the pandemic – have expressed their sadness at missing out on football for such an extended period.

Joshua Kimmich said: “The competition is missing. You can’t get rid of the energy. Everybody looks forward to training outdoors.”

While attacker Goretzka told German network Sport 1 that he’s hoping for a specific date to aim for.

“Light at the end of the tunnel would be helpful to get through the rest of the tunnel,” he said. He’s far from alone in such a thought.
