Barcelona tell Neymar he must publicly push to leave PSG – as Brazil star responds

Barcelona want to sign Neymar from PSG this transfer window despite losing the 27-year-old to the Ligue 1 giants two years ago.

The Brazil international has felt underwhelmed in France ever since his arrival, believing the standard of French football to be far too low for a player of his calibre.

Barcelona want to sign Antoine Griezmann but are also open to the idea of taking Neymar back on board.

The Samba star has supposedly told PSG he wants to leave the club this summer, with Manchester United and Real Madrid also in the mix for his signature.

But, now, Catalan newspaper Sport say Barcelona want Neymar to publicly express a desire to leave.

So far, however, he is unwilling to do that. At least, for the time being.

Neymar is determined to stay quiet for the time being, with Brazil still currently in action at the Copa America.

But it appears the 27-year-old will have to speak out if he is to seal an emotional homecoming to Barcelona this summer.

Sport say that Neymar would, ideally, rely on PSG and Barcelona thrashing out an agreement in private talks.

But that doesn’t appear to be the case with negotiations between the two teams strained.

Barcelona first angered PSG when they came calling for Marco Verratti in the summer of 2017, with Nou Camp chiefs publicly praising the Italy international.

Fuming at this, the Ligue 1 giants then activated Neymar’s £200million buyout clause to make him the most-expensive player in the world.

Since then, relations have only worsened.

Barcelona have left PSG trailing on transfers, signing the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Frenkie De Jong from under their noses.

And that could prevent the two clubs from agreeing a deal for Neymar this transfer window.

Former Brazil star Rivaldo believes his compatriot made a mistake in leaving Barcelona in 2017.

“More than not working, I think he’s done good things for PSG. The league is not the same, like the English league or Spanish league,” he said.

“The French league good but not so good for a player of Neymar’s level.

“He has to take the decision now, not wait for another season. Leaving Barcelona was a very sudden and quick decision. Also, the PSG president has left the door open, if he wants to leave, for him or any other players.

“Neymar has a few things that aren’t good, but I think if he comes back, he’s not a child. At 27 years of age, I think he can change.

“It’s a moment now to take advantage of the moment, for Barcelona… or [Real] Madrid. There’s talk of Madrid, or English football. I think whichever one he goes to he has the opportunity to be the best in the world.”
