Barcelona’s sporting director Eric Abidal insists the Spanish champions did not try to sign Bruno Fernandes ahead of Manchester United.

The Portugal international was United’s top target in the January transfer window and the club ended up agreeing a €80 million (£67.6m) deal with Sporting.

But shortly before Fernandes’ switch to Old Trafford, reports claimed that Barcelona had made a move to sign the 25-year-old ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side.

However, while Abidal admits Fernandes is an ‘interesting player’ he claims Barcelona had no interest in signing the midfielder.

‘He is an interesting player, but the agents try to do their job,’ he said in an interview with Sport.

‘We did not have that need.

‘They sell you the product, but we were not interested at all. Rodrigo really interested us.’
