PAUL Hollywood came under fire from The Great British Bake Off fans after he questioned a contestant’s age, despite dating 22-year-old Summer Monteys-Fullam.
The 53-year-old chef made ears prick up after he asked Jamie Finn how old he was, before he joked about being let out the house at his age in last night’s episode of the baking competition.
He asked the youngster: “What age are you?”
The student revealed he is 20 years old, but has taken a gap year to take part in the programme.
Paul quipped: “Does your mum know you’re here?”
But the comment surprised viewers, as Paul recently dated Summer who was 29 years his junior – although they have since split up.
Prior to dating the former barmaid, Paul was married to ex wife Alexandra after they tied the knot in 1998.
One watcher tweeted: “Paul: ‘what age are you?’ Jamie: ‘I’m 20’ Paul: ‘does your mum know you’re here?’ Dude your ex girlfriend was TWO YEARS OLDER WHEN YOU LEFT YOUR WIFE AND KIDS FOR HER.”
A second added: “Why’s Paul Hollywood making jokes about a 20 year old contestant’s age like he wasn’t cracking on with a 21 year old last year?? #GBBO“
A third tweeted: “Did Paul really age shame someone who is two years older than the woman he left his wife for?”
A separate viewer shared: “Paul Hollywood making jokes about someone’s young age and their mum letting them out is…well, you know. Come on now.”
While another wrote: “Ain’t your girlfriend the same age Paul? Lol.”
Later in the episode contestants paid tribute to their relatives by using their ancestors trusted recipes to make a fruit cake.
Steph said: “I am making my great grandma Rosie’s fruit cake.”
To which Paul questioned: “Is your great-grandma still with us?”
But the comment fuelled further jokes from viewers, with another viewer tweeting: “‘Is your great-grandma still with us?’ – is that Paul Hollywood looking for a new girlfriend his own age?”
