But No 10 has been told any change is likely to be met with “nuanced but strong” opposition from backbenchers and peers.

Boris Johnson has received a letter from Leader of the Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg, Leader of the Lords Baroness Evans, and chief whip Mark Spencer.

Opponents claim the move could have a big impact on religion and family life.

Yet Tory MP Nus Ghani insisted: “This shouldn’t be about the principle of keeping Sunday special as many shops, including supermarket metro stores, are already open.

“Sunday trading laws are outdated in these Covid-19 times.”

Fellow Tory MP Simon Hoare added: “Reform is long overdue.” Labour and the unions plan to  fight any change.

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw claims: “The last thing the retail sector needs is longer trading hours on a Sunday.

“There is no economic case for it and it will put extra pressure on staff.”
