TORIES are divided over the relaxation of the Sunday trading laws.

Campaigners demand the Government pushes through plans to keep larger stores open for longer than six hours.

But No 10 has been told any change is likely to be met with “nuanced but strong” opposition from backbenchers and peers.

Boris Johnson has received a letter from Leader of the Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg, Leader of the Lords Baroness Evans, and chief whip Mark Spencer.

Opponents claim the move could have a big impact on religion and family life.

Yet Tory MP Nus Ghani insisted: “This shouldn’t be about the principle of keeping Sunday special as many shops, including supermarket metro stores, are already open.

“Sunday trading laws are outdated in these Covid-19 times.”
