Avicii’s family launches mental health foundation in his memory

The family of Tim “Avicii“ Bergling have launched a mental health foundation in his memory.

The DJ and musician died on 20 April last year. At the time, his family released a statement which read: “When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music.”

“He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness. He could not go on any longer.”

According to Variety, The Tim Bergling Foundation “will initially focus on supporting people and organisations working in the field of mental illness and suicide prevention”, although it will also be active in climate change, development assistance, and nature conservation.

“Tim wanted to make a difference,” the statement from the family reads. “Starting a foundation in his name is our way to honour his memory and continue to act in his spirit.”

Avicii was a pioneer for the EDM genre and collaborated with artists including Madonna, Robyn, Major Lazer, Daft Punk and Coldplay.

In 2016, he retired from live performances after suffering multiple health issues including acute pancreatitis due to drinking alcohol. Just two years before, he had his gallbladder and appendix removed, and he cancelled tour dates in order to recover.
