'Avengers: Endgame' stars pay tribute to Stan Lee and attend special screening

Lee “had a childlike wonder and enthusiasm”

Avengers: Endgame actors have spoken about the late Stan Lee ahead of the new Marvel film hitting screens later this month.

Chris Hemswoth, who portrays Thor, and Scarlett Johansson, who plays Black Widow, were asked about being a part of the comic book writer’s legendary franchise.

“[Lee] just had a childlike wonder and enthusiasm,” Hemsworth told Entertainment Weekly. “You’d want to talk about something like what-it-all-means and so on, and he was just like, ‘No, I’m just telling stories and we’re having fun!’”

“There’s a deeper meaning in the message, which he achieved so beautifully, but the childlike nature about him made me think, ‘Oh, good, we can all just stay big kids forever’. He’s the perfect example.”

Johansson, meanwhile, said that she was “so nervous” when she first met Lee back in 2010 for the Iron Man 2 premiere.

“I think it was after the Iron Man 2 premiere, and I was just so nervous. I didn’t know how the audience or anybody would react to this beloved character and my interpretation of her, especially because I wasn’t originally cast, so I also had a lot of feelings about that,” she said.

“But when I saw [Lee] in the theatre and he was very excited I had a big sigh of relief after that.”

Hemsworth and Johansson were on the red carpet at London’s Picturehouse Central cinema yesterday (April 10) where they joined Paul Rudd, Trinh Tran, Joe Russo, and Anthony Russo for the fans’ advanced screening.

Avengers: Endgame is released in UK cinemas on April 25.
