Arsenal’s squad support the appointment of Freddie Ljungberg as interim coach, according to reports.

Unai Emery was dismissed as head coach on Friday morning in the wake of a humiliating defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt at the Emirates on Thursday night.

The latest set-back played out in front of a half-empty stadium and Arsenal’s board took the decision to axe Emery following a dismal start to his second season in charge.

Arsenal legend and coach Ljungberg has taken charge and the players see his ‘clarity’ as a welcome change, the Guardian claim.

The squad has not hid their frustration with Emery in recent weeks and communication has been a major issue.

Ljungberg has impressed since joining the coaching staff and the players have struggled to understand exactly what Emery wants from them on the pitch.

After announcing Emery’s sacking, Josh Kroenke released the following statement: ‘Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.’

Arsenal’s search for a new manager has reportedly already begun and at present Ljungberg is not considered as a long-term option.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo and former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri are being considered, while former Gunner and Manchester City’s assistant coach Mikel Arteta is also an option.

Arsenal say they have ‘full confidence’ in Ljungberg to take them forward with a busy winter period set to kick off.
