Are takeaways open during coronavirus lockdown and can I still order on Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats?

PEOPLE stuck at home during the coronavirus crisis will still be able to order takeaways from their favourite restaurants – as long as those restaurants keep trading.

The government’s closure of restaurants over the weekend has not been extended to takeaway services, meaning a number of outlets are still offering delivery or pick-up options.

But many – including big brands such as McDonald’s, KFC, Nando’s and Pizza Express – have closed their operations entirely or will do so in the coming days.

So you will need to check with your local restaurant to see if it is still open.

Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats are also still running, although again, only for restaurants which remain open.

Deliveroo said it had signed up almost 3,000 new restaurants in the last month, but would not say how many had dropped out in recent days due to more widespread closures.

Will Shu, chief executive and founder of Deliveroo, said: “We are working with restaurants to optimise their operations for delivery, and we are doing everything we can to make sure people still have access to the food they want and need.”

Just Eat is also still listing plenty of restaurants.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We work with 37,500 restaurant partners in the UK and they can determine if and when their business opens.

“Customers wishing to order a meal for delivery can see the options available in their area by visiting our app.”

It also did not respond when asked whether it had seen a fall in the number of businesses using its platform in recent days.

A number of restaurants on Uber Eats are now listed as unavailable, but many smaller local businesses seem to be still operating.

Takeaway companies are keen to keep delivery drivers safe, and so are asking customers to ensure a contactless handover.

This could mean handing over cash in an envelope, or if you are self-isolating, making sure the delivery driver just leaves your food outside your home and paying by card over the phone or online beforehand.
