Defending champion Gary Anderson was knocked out of the 2019 Champions League of Darts on the opening day after losing his first two group games.

The Scot was defeated 10-9 by James Wade in the evening session, having blown a 5-1 lead against Michael Smith earlier on Saturday in Leicester.

Michael van Gerwen’s victories over Wade and Smith in the same group mean Anderson is unable to qualify.

Rob Cross is also out after losing to Gerwyn Price and Daryl Gurney.

But world number seven Peter Wright is through to Sunday’s semi-finals following wins against Gurney and debutant Price.

The winner of Sunday’s final group match between Northern Ireland’s Gurney and Welshman Price will join Wright and Van Gerwen in the last four.

In Group A, Smith and Wade will meet to decide who goes into the semi-finals.

The PDC competition, which is being screened live by the BBC, features the top eight ranked players in the world split into two groups.

Their class shone through with heavy scoring, high averages and clinical finishing at the Morningside Arena.

Saturday’s eight matches, all the best of 21 legs, saw a total of 91 maximums, including 10 for Anderson in a losing cause against Wade.

Coverage of Sunday’s afternoon session gets under way on BBC Two along with the BBC Sport website and app at 13:00 BST.
