Sir Alex Ferguson has been left confused by Manchester United’s disinterest in signing Aston Villa star John McGinn, according to Bobby Jenks.

McGinn was spotted playing football in Scotland by Jenks and signed for Villa last year.

Ferguson reportedly tried and failed to get United to move for McGinn during the summer, with Villa demanding a whopping £50million for the 24-year-old.

Jenks claimed Ferguson is a big fan of McGinn and will be re-iterating to United that they should sign the Scotsman.

‘He’s up there with the best-performing midfielders in the division,’ Jenks told the Athletic about McGinn.

‘Wait until he’s had a year at that level and then we can say more.

‘What I do know is that Sir Alex Ferguson is wondering why Manchester United let a talented Scottish boy slip through.

‘He’ll be keeping a close eye on him that’s for sure and if he continues the way he is, you can bet he’ll be telling his pals at United, too.’

While Ferguson will be hoping United swoop for McGinn, the club appear more intent on bringing in attacking reinforcements in January.

Injuries to Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial has exposed United’s lack of depth in the forward department this season.

Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez were shipped off to Inter during the summer, but United did not replace either forward.

United are reportedly tracking Lyon’s Moussa Dembele and have placed Juventus goalscorer Mario Mandzukic and Bournemouth star Callum Wilson on a shortlist of options for January.
