Alan Shearer slams ‘uninterested’ Manchester United striker Anthony Martial

Alan Shearer hit out at Anthony Martial after another lacklustre performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers and isn’t sure the France international ‘enjoys playing football’.

Shearer, the Premier League’s record goalscorer, thinks Martial looks ‘uninterested’ whenever he steps onto the pitch and believes his ‘body language’ shows he doesn’t want to spearhead the Manchester United attack.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed Odion Ighalo on deadline day in order to ease his side’s attacking woes, with Marcus Rashford in danger of missing the majority of the season with a back injury.

But with United failing to score in four of their last five Premier League matches, Shearer believes Martial needs to step up and show some desire in order to help his goal-shy team.

‘If there is one man who sums up United’s struggles in front of goal, it is Anthony Martial,’ Shearer wrote in his Sun column.

He just looks uninterested. I never get the impression he enjoys playing football — which is something I’ve not really come across too much in the game before.

You look at his body language and it says, ‘I don’t want to be a No 9’.

That role isn’t just about scoring goals. You also have to bring your team-mates into the game and do plenty of running to get in behind the defenders.

He has one good game followed by three average ones — he’s a very frustrating player to watch. I’m sure all the fans agree.
