Shoe shopping is best done in the afternoon because feet tend to expand naturally during the day.

Wear the same kind of shoes that you will be wearing with the shoes.

Have both your feet measured by the salesperson and don’t forget to repeat this step whenever you buy new shows. If one of your feet is either wider or larger than the other, buy a size that fits your larger foot. Try extra wide shoes if you have wide feet.

Stand in your shoes. Ensure that you have at least ¼ to ½ inch of space between the end of the shoe and your longest toe.

Walk in the shoes to find out how they feel. Do the heels slip off or pinch, or do they fit snugly? Is there sufficient room at the balls of your feet? Avoid rationalizing that the shoes will stretch with time or just need to be “broken in”. Instead, find shoes that fit right from the start.

Trust your comfort level as opposed to the shoe’s description or size. Sizes may vary from one manufacturer to the next. No matter how comfortable an advert claims the shoes are, you should be the real judge.

Feel the inside of the shoes to find out whether they have any seams, tags, or other material likely to irritate the feet or cause blisters.

Turn over the shoes to examine the soles. Are they sufficiently sturdy to provide protection from sharp objects?  Do they offer any cushioning? Don’t forget to take the sole test while walking around the shoe store: are the soles cushioning against impact? It can also be a good idea to walk on both carpet and hard surfaces to determine how the shoes feel.
